The Legacy of RBG

As the country and hopefully the world mourns the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg (aka Notorious RBG) I felt that I should say something about her and what her work meant to me.

There are certain things that you will always remember. For my generation it iwas where you were on September 11, 2001; but not I can add to the list where I was and what I was doing when I heard of RBG’s passing.

Since the day our current president (I won’t speak and/or type his name) got elected; there has been an unspoken tension in the country (for those who identify as liberals at minimum) that the nature of the Supreme Court was going to change. It started with the robbery of the seat for Merrick Garland and then with the appointment of Brett Kavanaugh even with the claims that were made against him. RBG was always the cornerstone of the liberals on the bench and I knew that her staying on the bench until the 2020 election was gong to be critical.

Throughout the past four years whenever I saw a news alert about RBG I would always hold my breath while I read it; hoping it wouldn’t be the news that I recieved last Friday evening. So what was I doing last Friday; I was comfortably in my bed re-watching Hamilton for what was probably the 30th time. I had said that I was going to unplug for the evening other than watching that, but alas the news alerts kept going off on my phone. And that is when I stopped to look to see what was so important and that is when I gasped aloud.

In the five seconds to read the headline it felt a little bit like my world had stopped. I felt very lost even though I knew exactly where I was. The world got a little bit darker. After my initial shock and relaying the information to my family, I cried. And then I was a bit devestated and felt defeated. I then decided to scroll through social media; which was both a good idea and a bad idea. It gave me the will to fight for something better (which I will get too later) and it also made me sad a how many people couldn’t even take 5 mintues to mourn they were already to the point of how they were talking about who should replace RBG.

I don’t want to get into the politics of it, but lets be honest; there is no one that can replace RBG. If you look at her record of of cases that she brought before the Supreme Court before she sat on the bench you will see that she wanted equality for everyone, not just women. The documentary that CNNFilms did on her called RBG was wonderful. It made her a real person in my eyes rather than just this figure that everyone knew and loved and gave a great nickname too.

So as the evening went on everyone was noting on social media that RBG would want to be remembered as a fighter and that the best thing to do for her legacy was to keep on fighting. So outside of voting, I decided to embody on of her quotes, “Fight for the things that you care about. But do it in a way that will lead others to join you.”. So that in a sense is where this blog came from. There are many things that I care about, so why not create a space where I can right about them all. I also hope that I can hope to inspire others to take a stand about the things that they care about in any shape or form.
