I’m very fluid with the types of books that I read. I have realized that as a girl I loved the rom-coms and the ideals that come with them. But as I have gotten older (and wiser) I have realized that the world isn’t as ideal as they are in rom-coms. I will note that doesn’t stop me from reading them, but I try to move away from the genre when I can.
So when the opportunity presented itself to read The Survivalists as part of a book tour with Cocoachapters, I jumped at the chance. The description seemed great and the premise was something that I wasn’t sure what to expect, which I have realized I need from my books these days. Doomsday preppers or “Survivalists” as they called themselves in modern day New York City and the main character was a Black female lawyer, sight me up.
Turns out I was surprised all right. Surprised that I didn’t love it from the very beginning and surprised that I parts of it may have gone over my head at times. As I got further into it did pick up, but it also just got a bit strange. Strange in a way that I wasn’t expecting at all. And the ending, did see that coming at all.
If you want to read a book that will make you think and will shock you a bit, I suggest this one.
